About the Role

In this role, you will utilize your expertise in analyzing project plans, specifications, and relevant documents to prepare comprehensive and precise cost estimates. Conducting thorough quantity takeoffs, researching material and labor costs, and collaborating with suppliers and subcontractors, you will determine the overall expenses associated with each project phase. As a construction estimator you will be responsible for estimating of civil, structural and architectural elements of a project. You may work with project owners, developers, general contractors or subcontractors in this role.

Core Duties

  • Review and interpret drawings and specifications and relevant technical documents to understand project Scope of Work (SoW) and the main requirements.
  • Populate project Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) utilizing a relevant format including elemental or trade formats and applies Master Format CSI coding system.
  • Conduct quantity takeoff and develop bill of materials by applying method of measurements from civil, structural or architectural drawings.
  • Prepare estimate resource file including labour, equipment and material rates and update the resources per project.
  • Prepare conceptual estimates (class 5 or 4) utilizing relevant benchmarking to similar projects.
  • Prepare detailed estimates (Class 3, 2 or 1) utilizing crew assemblies to come up with the cost breakdown of labour, equipment and material.
  • Prepare indirect cost estimate including site setup, consumables, temporary facilitates and staffing.
  • Apply construction escalation for the duration of the project.
  • Prepare alternative technical concept estimates to support value engineering and design optimization process.
  • Support contractors and subcontractors in their bid procurement process including define/maintain a directory of subcontractor or suppliers, solicit quote and evaluate/award quotations.
  • Define Schedule of Values (SoV) for different trades based on the final agreed cost estimate.
  • Support project owners or consultants in their RFP procurement process.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of post-secondary education from an accredited university in the field of construction management, civil engineering, quantity surveying or other relevant programs.
  • Three to Five years of practical experience in construction filed specifying in estimating or quantity surveying.
  • Must have detailed understanding of construction sequencing and construction means and methods preferably in heavy civil and building projects.
  • Ability to utilize Bluebeam and Heavy Bid (HCSS) software would consider as a strong asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Being accredited by a relevant designation such as PQS or CEP would consider as a strong asset.
